I have written a number of vacuum cleaner reviews, but every now and then it’s good to write a review of a less-expensive vacuum cleaner such as the Hoover Tempo Widepath Upright Vacuum, Bagged, U5140–900. Many of the reviews that I write concerned themselves with top-of-the-line vacuums costing hundreds of dollars. But the fact is, it’s quite possible to find a vacuum for well ~~under $100~~ that will do a good job for you. This Hoover is one such vacuum.

While it may not have all the bells and whistles of the more expensive models, it clearly has some good points that make it a good value. Here are some of its features.

Powerful 12 Amp Motor

In any vacuum, a powerful motor is the key to powerful suction. Other factors such as how good a seal the design makes with the floor, or how the airflow is directed within the head of the vacuum also can have an effect on how good a vacuum cleaner is. However, nothing is more important than the motor, and the Tempo WidePath is been given a 12 amp motor with commensurately powerful suction.

24 Foot Power Cord

One of the factors in determining how convenient of vacuum cleaner is to use his how long the power cord is. If the cord is too short it will be necessary to stop vacuuming, find another outlet, and then resume vacuuming. At 24 feet, the power cord of this vacuum gives plenty of reach for most rooms.

Wide, 15 Inch Path

As the name suggests, the tempo wide path features a wide cleaning path at 15 inches. Just as it takes fewer passes them along with the larger lawnmower, using a wider vacuum cleaner means fewer passes, and therefore faster vacuuming. Most of us live very busy lives nowadays, and a little thing like having a wider vacuum cleaner if it saves us a few minutes is a good thing to have.

Air Filtration System

The tempo wide path really shines in one area above many other vacuum cleaners. That area is air filtration. The bag itself acts as a filter and can trap 99% of dust and pollen’s down to 5 micron. I wasn’t sure myself of just how small he micron was until I looked it up. The micron is a mere 1/1000 of a millimeter. That’s tiny. In addition to the air running through the bag in which dirt and dust are collected, air must pass through filters before leaving the bag and reentering the room. The filters are easily cleaned by rinsing.

Five Position Carpet Height Adjust

This vacuum is designed to adjust to varying carpet heights. This capability allows for superior cleaning on all four types. From shag rugs left over from the 70s to the most tightly woven Berber rug, this vacuum can handle them all.

Attachments

The Tempo WidePath is well-equipped with plenty of on board attachments. In addition to the flexible hose, there are two extension wands, which locked together to provide plenty of reach so you can clean anywhere in your house. There is a crevice tool, which is great for vacuuming between pillows on sofas, or being able to reach into tight corners. Then there is the upholstery tool. A tool for vacuuming chairs and couches and any furniture which is upholstery. And finally we come to the dusting brush. The dusting brush is used to dust moldings, baseboards, shelves, and lampshades. It can be used almost anywhere a dust cloth would be used, but of course the advantage to using it is that instead of stirring up the dust spreading it in the air, the vacuum will suck it down into the bag, where it will be trapped.

Conclusion

When I began researching this vacuum cleaner, I found reviews ran the gamut from thinking it was an extraordinary machine to some who claim they wish they had never bought it. Out of over ~~2000 reviews~~, I noticed that the vast majority were four and five star reviews. This speaks volumes to the actual quality of the machine being investigated. While it is possible that some people may have received vacuums that didn’t meet their expectations, upon closer examination, it seemed to me that most of the negative reviews were caused by unrealistic expectations. It seems they expected performance and extras of a $500 vacuum cleaner, even though they had only paid about $70. Every so often, you come across a product such as the Hoover WindTunnel T-Series Rewind Upright Vacuum, Bagless, UH70120 that you find has so much to offer and is such a good value that you just have to write about it to let somebody know about it. Such a product is this one!

To be sure, there are some points that I find a little disappointing, but they are very minor, and I’ll discuss them later in this review. Overall though, finding the best upright vacuum cleaner with all the features and abilities of this one for the price is just extraordinary. You may be able to find a better one, but you will have to search among the models aimed at cleaning professionals from companies such as Electrolux, Kirby, or Royal. Unless you have a desire to spend several hundred dollars on a vacuum, then this Hoover vacuum cleaner is a better choice.

However, in favor of a bag design, it’s much easier to replace a bag without spilling dust and putting more dirt back into the air. Also, while bags must be replaced regularly, remember that the bagless designs employ filters,which must be regularly cleaned and occasionally replaced. Each has advantages and disadvantages and you must decide which seems like the best fit to you.

The Shark really is an ingenious vacuum. The features match that of the top of the line swivel base style, bagless vacuums at about ¼ the price. From the triple filtration system including a HEPA for improved air quality, and a fully-sealed system to keep the dust from being pumped back out into the room like many vacuums allow, the Shark really is a dirt eating monster that will clean up any surface.

When you need a powerhouse, this is the vacuum to bring into your home. With a 12 amp motor, there’s plenty of suction power, and its 5-position head adjusts to any floor type. What really stands out about the Hoover Widepath is the massive 15-inch roller base. It devours the floor and makes vacuuming short work in even the largest rooms.

The Widepath is a bagged vacuum, but it still has the great filtration system you expect now from the very best vacuums. The Allergen filtration system is fine and captures even the smallest particles such as ragweed and other pollens. Just yesterday, I was talking to my sister, who just had a new baby six months ago, on the telephone. We were not really talking about anything important, just normal stuff about the kids and the house, when I started my normal rant about housework. To be honest, I don’t hate all housework; however, I do hate vacuuming, or rather, I hate vacuuming every day. I began telling my sister, as I usually do, about how I hate vacuuming only to find that I still have ground-in dirt deep down in my carpets that my vacuum just will not pull up.

My sister and her husband make quite a bit more money per year than my husband and I do, which allows her to purchase all the latest cleaning equipment. She mentioned that she had recently purchased a new vacuum from Amazon. You have to understand that my sister and her husband only buy the best of the best; and they frequently look at various online websites just to ensure they are getting the best deal on the best products. So I knew when she began telling me about this vacuum, that it was a product worth hearing about—even if it was a little expensive. She told me the name of the product and I immediately went online to look at the new Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional Vacuum – Model NV356. I did a Google search, however nothing much came up; I am guessing that there is not much information because it is a new product. I plan to purchase this vacuum, as my sister said that some of her friends bought the model last week and that they are more than satisfied with the quality of the Shark navigator Lift Away.

The thing I love the most about this vacuum cleaner is the five-year warranty. It is not often that a company will back a product with a warranty for that span of time; when they do, you know that you are dealing with a quality product. My brother-in-law says that the thing he likes most about the Shark Lift-Away is that it is easy to maneuver; my sister and her husband have a lot of larger furnishings, which I am sure are difficult to vacuum around, especially since some of the items cannot be moved. One of their friends whom purchased this vacuum has a pregnant wife and their friend told my sister and her husband that his wife doesn’t have a hard time using the cleaner, because it is lightweight and easy to lift and carry. The anti-allergen and power suction features make cleaning with the Shark vacuum easy and worry free. My brother-in-law is a clean carpet freak, and while they have two pets in the house, he doesn’t like to see any pet hair or dirt on the carpet. My brother-in-law had my sister relay a story to me about his friend who recently purchased the NV356. He said that his friend has three large dogs and a longhaired cat living with him in his home. The avid pet lover did not think he would ever find a vacuum that would remove all of the pet hair from his carpeting or from his furniture. After purchasing the Shark Navigator Lift-Away NV356, he tried the vacuum on the carpet in his living room, hoping that it would pick up a little more of the pet hair than his old vacuum. My brother-in-law’s friend was really shocked to see all of the pet hair and dirt that piled up in the canister, after cleaning their living room. He has never witnessed a vacuum that would pick up that much pet hair or dirt. He said that he was delighted and disgusted at the same time; he had no idea how dirty his carpets really were. Well, that story is exactly what sold my brother-in-law on the Shark Navigator. It can pick up a lot more dirt and pet hair compared to other upright vacuum cleaners, and it does so without losing suction. As a homeowner, I am always on the lookout for new and better ways to keep my house clean. While I love my big vacuum, there are some messes that just aren’t big enough for a full-sized vacuum, and forget about lugging that big thing up and down stairs to clean them.

I had a small vacuum cleaner in the past, but I was ready for something better, and so I began to do some homework.

A Eureka 71B hand-held vacuum review pointed me toward this interesting machine and I took it from there, seeking information on how it worked and performed.

Here is what I found out about the Eureka 71B hand-held vacuum.

What to Look for in a Hand-Held Vacuum

Before I even started to check out the features on the Eureka it had to meet my price and value approval. After that, the things I wanted from a hand vacuum were:

Bagless collection with dust filter
Long chord for easy access
Strong suction
Attachments for hard to reach places, and high areas
Compact design and easy chord storage
Great Power at a Great Price

As always I’m looking for the best vacuum for the money. Cost is always a factor, but cheap isn’t a good value if the item doesn’t perform. However, I really feel that the Eureka 71B hand-held vacuum is a really great value for the price. It is very affordable, and still has many fantastic features, not the least of which is the 5.5 amps of power that fuels this baby.
I always check Amazon.com for the best prices, and the Eureka 71B Hand-Held is available there for the fantastic price of $38.99. That’s a fantastic savings over retail suggested price of $59.99. That plus the great features and power of this little vacuum make it a must have in my book.

Big Vacuum Features in a Small Body

What I really loved the most about the Eureka vacuum is that it was much more than a simple suction unit. It looks and feels like a big vacuum cleaner in a small lightweight case. It has a canister that you carry like most hand vacuums, but the suction end is shaped like a vacuum cleaner head with roller brush and everything to really get into carpet and pick up debris.

Along with the fantastic power of the roller head, the Eureka 71B has a small hose attachment, a true scaled-down version of the big vacuum, so that you can get into crevices easier, and handle tight spots with ease. The hose is flexible and stretches to three times its regular length to really get you to where the mess is. You can even use the hose nozzle to get at nasty cobwebs in the corners and on the ceiling.

Space-Age Design

One look at this small vacuum cleaner will tell you it is unique. It has a European look with its curved design, and blunt-nosed vacuum head. The handle is curved right into the top of the unit, and the flexible attachment nozzle is wrapped up over the back of the handle.
It is clean and sharp looking, but of course, looks have to follow function. Everything about the way the 71B is designed is in order to make it a high-performance hand vacuum—looks just came naturally.

Riser Visor Eliminates Contortions

You can’t get more “space-age” than this. The top cover of the rotating brush nozzle actually lifts up when vacuuming upright surfaces. That means if you want to do drapes, or the risers on stairs, you can just hold the vacuum the way you normally would, and the lift the visor up to expose the brush vertically. Why is that so great? The riser visor means no more contortions trying to bend and maneuver a hand-held vacuum into upright or tight areas.

Clean Everything Better and Easier

Some of the things I would have never considered using a hand vacuum for in the past are fast and easy work with the powerful little 71B. I can clean out my oven, getting into those tight holes where crumbs and other dirt can fall inside the area and are hard to get out. I also like the fact that I could use the Eureka 71B to clean car upholstery and carpets. With the wand I could even get underneath the seats. That’s something I haven’t been able to do unless I lugged my full-size vacuum out to the garage in the past.
Because the 71B is so light, it would be perfect to carry on car trips, or even take out to the boat and clean up after a fun day on the water. You can take it anywhere you have access to electricity.

Bagless Ease

Of course, in today’s market, a vacuum has to be bagless. Who wants to mess around with bags anymore? Even though my old-fashioned model of hand vacuum was also bagless, even way back when they first came out, those early models didn’t often include filters. It was just a catch bin of sorts.

The Eureka hand-vacuum has a filter over the intake that traps particles and keeps them from being thrust back into the air. The filter is easy to get at and clean. Just pop off the canister, slip out the filter and use another vacuum to clean it or wash it in clear water (no solutions or soap) to get it really clean. As with any vacuum filter, make sure it is completely dry before putting it back in the vacuum and using it.
To get rid of the debris the vacuum picked up, just dump the canister. It’s as easy as that. Once empty, the canister snaps right back into place. No clips or pins to break or mess around with.

Dual-Position Switch for Optimum Performance

Like a big vacuum, the little Eureka 71B has a switch position for both the powerful brush head, and the flexible nozzle. When using the nozzle and attachments, the switch belongs in the “suction only” position. When using the vacuum brush head, it should be in “moving brush roll” position to power up the roller for heavy duty penetration into thick carpeting.
The control switch is in an easy to reach place where you can work it without moving your hand from the grip. It’s a slider you can move with your thumb with ease as you continue about your chores.

Out of the Way Chord

Nothing is more aggravating than a bunch of chord that has to be wrapped around the vacuum, and slides around or gets caught on everything when it’s in storage. The Eureka 71B takes care of that with ease. The electric chord wraps neatly around the base of the unit in a recessed groove so it isn’t loose or easily hooked on items so it can come undone.

Extras, Extras—Read All About Them

The Eureka hand-held 71B comes with a crevice tool that is the perfect size for small jobs. It stores neatly in a compartment on the back of the unit which makes it great for easy access. It slips on the flexible hose nozzle to get into tight places, up against walls or even in the creases of draperies or clothing.
With all of the great features of the Eureka 71B you’d think that would be enough for one design, but there’s more. You can get extra attachments such as computer suction attachment to get at the dust and dirt inside your computer fans and keyboard.

Drawbacks

The one problem I find with the Eureka 71B is that it isn’t a chargeable unit, so you must have an electrical outlet available. Most of the time, that’s not going to be a problem, and with the 20 foot cord; it’s not likely you’ll ever run into a situation where you can’t reach what you want to clean up. However, if they ever make this as a re-chargeable vacuum, I’m going to be in heaven.
